Facts About Virgin Mary

The Virgin Mary is also known as St Mary and Mother Mary and is revered worldwide as the mother of Jesus Christ.  Her story begins in the New Testament when the angel Gabriel appears to her telling her that she has been selected to be the mother of the promised Messiah, Jesus, conceiving him through the Holy Spirit. This is why she is called the Virgin Mary.

Why was Mary chosen to be the mother of the Jesus? Roman Catholics believed that Mary was born by Immaculate Conception and was filled with grace from the moment of her conception in her mother’s womb. This meant that she was free from the stain of original sin and therefore suitable to be the mother of the Messiah. However, there has been much controversy over whether she was a divine being or simply a chaste human being chosen by God for the task.

In many of the classic depictions of the Virgin Mary, she is shown wearing blue and white robes. One reason given for this is that white symbolizes purity and virginity, whilst blue is the color of Heaven which represents her role as Queen of Heaven and Earth. This is perhaps the reason why most of the costumes available are in blue and white. Another, more practical reason is that during the Renaissance period when many of the portraits were painted, there were strict rules for the colors to be used for the Virgin Mary and saints. The color blue was derived from lapis lazuli, a semi-precious stone that was extremely costly, even more than gold, and was used as an expression of glorification and devotion.

Works of art showing the Virgin Mary with the child Jesus are often referred to as The Madonna and Child or The Virgin and Child. Here are some of the most famous paintings depicting the Virgin Mary:

Madonna and Child with a Pomegranate by Leonardo Da Vinci
The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne by Leonardo Da Vinci
Madonna del Granduca by Raphael
The Sistine Madonna by Raphael
Madonna of the Book by Botticelli

If you want to know more about the Virgin Mary, her husband Joseph and the story of the nativity, then why not watch the movie, The Nativity Story (2006). It stars Keisha Castle-Hughes, who was 16 at the time of filming (around the same age as Mary), as Mary and tells beautifully the story of the nativity.
